Axolotls range in length from 6 to 18 inches as a mature adult and have many features of a salamander including external gills, which are generally lost when salamanders reach adulthood. They have wide heads and eyes with now lids, underdeveloped limbs with long digits, and vestigial teeth that develop during metamorphosis. They possess four pigmentation genes that provide them with various color variants.

A sexually mature adult axolotl, at age 18–27 months, ranges in length from 15 to 45 cm (6 to 18 in), although a size close to 23 cm (9 in) is most common and greater than 30 cm (12 in) is rare.
Axolotls are members of the tiger salamander, or Ambystoma tigrinum, species complex, along with all other Mexican species of Ambystoma. Their habitat is like that of most neotenic species—a high-altitude body of water surrounded by a risky terrestrial environment.

Chlorine, commonly added to tapwater, is harmful to axolotls. A single axolotl typically requires a 150-litre tank. Axolotls spend the majority of the time at the bottom of the tank.

The axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum, is a type of salamander that doesn't go through metamorphosis. Salamanders are amphibians that, like frogs and newts, start off living in the water.
Axolotls Fish
Axolotls may look like a real life cartoon character, but they are actually closely related to the Tiger Salamander! They are long and slender, with soft slimy skin, but unlike their salamander relatives, they have large feathery gills and paddle-like tails as they are fully aquatic.

Decorate the aquarium with a mixture of plastic plants and oxygenating plants. Decorative pebbles can be added, but avoid using gravel. All decor must be larger than the axolotls mouth to avoid accidental ingestion.
