African Cichlid Fish
African Cichlid Fish
There are 3 great Lakes in which these fish are found, Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Victoria, as well as other small estuaries and rivers. These Great Lakes formed over 10 million years ago when Mountain Valleys filled with water and over time the volcanic formations and rocks, helped to create the water parameters as to where the cichlids prefer them. High ph values of 8 - 9ph have been recorded throughout the lakes. Males are normally more colourful then females in most species of Africans. African cichlids are prized and adored for their striking beautiful colouration and attitude, these fish are the closest thing to saltwater fish without all the work involved, they are very hardy fish, which makes it a perfect fit for Hobbyists looking to have Bursts of Colour as well as they are constantly active.
Peacocks (Aulonocara) are sought after for their bright and vibrant colourations, Zebra Cichlids (Mbuna) are also colourful but with more attitude, Haplochromis (Larger Cichlids), Tropheus, Julidochromis and Brichardi are also great additions to an already stocked African Cichlid Aquarium.
African Chichlid Fish
Many African cichlids, like Tropheus and Mbuna, primarily eat algae, biofilm and aquatic plants. These fish are meant to graze all day and have a really long intestinal tract so they can absorb as many nutrients as possible from food that has a lower fat and protein content.
